Questions to consider when choosing a long-term care home
The home:
- Are the staff friendly?
- Do you sense an atmosphere of warmth and concern?
- Do residents look content and well cared for?
- Is there a tone of dignity and respect for the residents?
- Is the home convenient for friends and family to visit?
- Can you bring your own furnishings?
- What services are available at an extra charge? (e.g., hairdressing, foot care)
Personal Choices
- Is there flexibility around visiting hours?
- Are the activities at the home interesting and appealing?
- Can you arrange to sample an activity at the home?
- Is public transportation available?
- What are the policies around smoking and alcoholic beverages?
- Is the home able/willing to meet your religious/cultural needs?
Family Involvement
- Are Family Council minutes posted?
- Is there a Family Council member available to speak to you?
Food
- Is the home able/willing to meet your dietary needs?
- Are the menus appealing?
- Can residents bring in their own food?
- Can you arrange to sample a meal?
Medical Support
- Can your family doctor continue to provide care?
- What special needs can the home accommodate? (e.g., oxygen, scooters, electric wheelchairs)
Governance
- Is the home accredited?
- Have you reviewed the long-term care home's Inspection Report(s)?
- Did you review the Health Quality Ontario Website (www.hqontario.ca ) for unbiased information about the Quality of Ontario's long-term care homes?
- How is billing arranged?
